Botanicals

Chai tea is a fragrant, spicy tea that originated in India. Black tea and Pu-Erh tea are thought to support gut bacteria and aid digestion. While the antioxidant-rich spices such as cardamom, cinnamon and clove, along with ginger are wonderfully warming making it a great Winter tonic.

We source organic black Assam tea from the Indian state of Assam. Its production process gives it a distinctive flavour, colour, and nutrient profile with many potential health benefits. It’s well known for its rich, malty flavour and savoury aroma. After fresh Assam tea leaves are harvested and withered they undergo a fermentation process. This process stimulates chemical changes in the leaves, resulting in unique flavours, colour, and plant compounds that are characteristic of this tea.

The organic Pu-Erh tea we use is sourced from China’s Yunnan province where it is harvested by hand in the traditional manner. Pu-Erh tea is unique because it is an aged, fermented tea using a natural fermentation process. This process oxidizes the plant’s leaves and is believed to amplify its antioxidant benefits. It also contributes to the tea’s distinctive flavour and aroma. Pu-Erh has a robust, earthy base and the longer it’s stored, the more flavourful it will taste.

According to legend, the origin of chai dates back more than 5,000 years, when a king in what is now India ordered a spiced beverage to be created for use in Ayurveda. Ayurveda is a traditional medicinal practice in which herbs and spices are used for healing. The heat from ginger was believed to stimulate digestion. The antiseptic properties in cloves were thought to help relieve pain. While cardamom was felt to be a mood elevator and cinnamon to support circulation and respiratory function.
